Not Dead Can’t Quit!
It is just four simple words connected together but the structure and intention of its message is loud and clear; if you are not dead then you have no excuse to quit. Every great accomplishment in the whole of human history owes its existence to the basic fact that, whoever discovered, created or owned it refused to quit until it came to be.
"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certainway to succeed is to always try just one more time."
"The aphorism, “As a man thinketh in his heart so is he," not only embraces the whole of a man’s being, but is so comprehensive as to reach out to every condition and circumstance of his life. A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts."
-James Allen As A Man Thinketh
There are worse things than death, like not living your life. While this may seem like a duh, you would be surprised at how often we forget this and just watch our lives (the ambitions, aspirations and affections) pass us by.
There’s an axiom that I go to whenever the going get tough. It is, Not Dead Can’t Quit!
It means that as long I am alive, I’m in the game and I refuse to give up on myself and what I am capable of being.
I created and used this phrase while I was a U.S. Navy SEAL for ten years and still use it everyday to help me stay in the game until I accomplish any challenging task I’m engaged in.
Whatever it is that you want out of life it all comes down to your ability to focus. No one really ever teaches us how to focus other than to say “focus.” We are supposed to understand exactly what that means and maybe, for the most part, we do get the gist of what that means. The problem is that focus is like a laser beam: Move a little to the left or right, add a little fog or some distance, and the laser either misses the target completely or diffuses to such an extent that it acts like a poor flashlight.
There is a school of thought that seems to suggest that in order to make your dreams come true all you need to do is think positively about them and that through some magical law of attraction the things that you want will just come to you. Really? Are they joking?
I remember getting ready to begin SEAL Training and I was very nervous. I didn’t want to fail and I keep looking for the thing that was going to give me an edge. I kept thinking it was going to be some kind of gimmick or gear that would help through the hardest parts. I was lucky to have a SEAL living across the hall from me. He was big, strong and absolutely looked the part. I finally worked up the courage to ask him what special thing it was I need in order to succeed. With iron in eyes he simply said, “Guts kid. All you need is guts.”
